Weather in Woodland Hills can be brutally hot, windy and dry. In the fall, the dry gusty winds cause fires in the surrounding hills and canyons. It is sad to say we actually have a fire season here in the San Fernando Valley. We used to shuffle our chameleon cages indoors when the weather was bad then shuffle them back outside when the weather was good. Sometimes it was hard to say from day to day what the weather would bring.
So in 2008 we decided to build a greenhouse for the chameleons. It is about 20 feet long, by 14 feet wide and about 12-1/2 feet tall. With misters, fans, roof vents and a swamp cooler, it is very easy to create a warm and humid environment for the chameleons.
The south half of the greenhouse roof has Solacryl panels. This is the material used in tanning beds. Solacryl is currently the best product on the market for this application because it allows 90% UV transfer. The other sides of the greenhouse are covered with twin-walled polycarbonate which is great for insulating and provides a little privacy. |
